Contents Insurance
Contents insurance should ideally insure all of the possessions that you would take with you if you
were to move home, and include furniture, furnishings including curtains, electrical equipment, clothing,
jewellery, videos, DVD's, CD's, and even frozen food and drinks for some policies.
All contents insurance policies will provide cover up to a monetary limit, set by the policy owner
based on their assessment of the value of the contents of their home.
You are covered for loss or damage to your property, and even accidental damage if you chose this
optional extra, whilst they are in your property including the boundaries of the garden. You are insured
for damage from leaking pipes, tanks and heating installations, subsidence, flooding, fire, and from theft,
many policies also cover some of the more unusual sources of damage such as aircraft.
Particularly expensive items of jewellery, antiques, or art should be named and listed separately with
your insurance company or they risk not being insured at all, including them may attract a higher premium.
Accidential Damage
Its well worth considering adding accidental damage to your contents insurance policy, however it's
important to read the fine print on your policy document as accidental damage doesn't always cover you
for damage to mirrors, TVs and videos, or computers.
Bear in mind that whichever contents insurance policy you take out, claims will be limited to damage
occurring within the home, therefore if something is stolen from your car, or damaged elsewhere whilst out
and about, you are not insured. Many possessions are taken out of the home; such as pedal cycles, cameras,
camcorders, and lap top computers to name just a few.
Some policies include liability insurance, to cover you in the event of a visitor injuring themselves on your property,
and subsequently making a claim against you, these claims can amount to substantial sums.
